I'm almost 70 now, and believe me, it's not easy between the health challenges, and creaky knees, but here are a few tips for aging well.
Self-care becomes even more important than before. Keep up with your healthy diet, exercise as best you can, and remain active. Einstein said, "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving."
But it's OK to treat yourself a bit too. Accept the changes and health challenges, we all go through it. And it's OK to ask for help lifting that heavy box or getting those groceries delivered. Live in the middle ground, stay involved with activities and people, but if you feel like taking a break, enjoy your rest, you've earned it!
Smile at children and dogs. That will always lighten your heart.
Every day do at least one nice thing for someone, even if it's just giving someone a nice tip or buying a muffin for a homeless guy. It will probably make you feel good too. Be kind to yourself too.
And never forget what a difference, for good or ill, just one person can make. So stay on the high path. Forgive and forget.
And if you get bored, try something completely new, like square dancing, improv acting or baking bread. Whatever strikes your fancy. But do it just for fun, not for money or awards. Chances are with that attitude you will succeed that much more.
And be proud of yourself. You've run a good race, and the end post is in sight. Whether it be a year away or twenty, continue to befriend yourself and others, and do as best you can at whatever you do, for as long as you can. Strangers and loved ones will thank you, and I will too.
