Last night I attended the Opening Night screening and party for the Pan African Film and Arts Festival held at Rave Cinemas, Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. We saw Of Good Report, a controversial film written and directed by Jahmil Qubeka from South Africa. The film was shot in black and white, and is reminiscent of Hitchcock. It has some very disturbing elements of violence, but was well directed. However, because of the subject matter, I would not recommend it for sensitive viewers. Mr. Qubeka is undoubtedly a very talented filmmaker though, and I look forward to seeing more of his work.
Before the screening, Charles S. Dutton was honored with the 2014 PAFF Lifetime Achievement Award. He is an award-winner actor and director most familiar as Roc on the Fox comedy of the same name. After the screening, the director and star of the film Of Good Report discussed their project. The conversation was certainly very lively!
Then I went to an exciting After Party which had a great band, nice food, and lots of fashionably dressed folks. I just wish I could have stayed all night! The festival runs through February 17. Information and tickets are available here: paff.org. More photos available at Flickr.com/joybennett.
